Jim Ritchie

Jim Ritchie brings nearly thirty years of legal and public policy experience to the firm. His work focuses on international commerce and investment, trade, the acquisition and negotiation of economic development incentives, trade association management and government relations. In addition, he has extensive experience in health care, insurance, commercial transactions, hospitality and resort development, general business matters. He represents clients across the Southeast, the Americas and  Europe.

As part of the firm’s trade association and government relations work, Jim serves as the Executive Director of one of the leading business associations in South Carolina and advises several others.


Concurrent with his professional career, Jim served in the South Carolina Senate for eight years and as Majority Whip for the last four years of his tenure. There, Jim learned to work effectively with legislators on both sides of the aisle and with many levels of government to achieve important policy goals. As Majority Whip he was responsible marshaling support for key initiatives and was chief negotiator with opposition members in finding a common ground to achieve passage of important legislation. These experiences and perspectives are  valuable benefits for our clients.

Jim’s legislative service was marked by his leadership to increase South Carolina’s competitiveness in the global economy. He successfully sponsored and led passage of landmark legislation establishing many of the state’s most innovative and successful economic development initiatives and public/private partnerships.

Jim serves on a number of state and national boards including:

  • The South Carolina Commission on International Cooperation and Agreement.
  • The American Legislative Exchange Council, International Relations Task Force
  • Business Member and Legal Advisor, Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Southeast
